Multiple Cracks Propagate Simultaneously in Polymer Liquids in Tension.
Understanding the mechanism of fracture is essential for material and process design. While the initiation of fracture in brittle solids is generally associated with the preexistence of material imperfections, the mechanism for initiation of fracture in viscoelastic fluids, e.g., polymer melts and solutions, remains an open question. We use high speed imaging to visualize crack propagation in e...
متن کاملHow fast can cracks propagate?
We have performed atomic simulations of crack propagation along a weak interface joining two harmonic crystals. The simulations show that a mode II shear dominated crack can accelerate to the Rayleigh wave speed and then nucleate an intersonic daughter that travels at the longitudinal wave speed. This contradicts the general belief that a crack can travel no faster than the Rayleigh speed.
متن کاملWhen and how do cracks propagate?
Crack propagation in an isotropic 2d brittle material is widely viewed as the interplay between two separate criteria. Griffith’s cap on the energy release rate along the crack path decides when the crack propagates, while the Principle of Local Symmetry PLS decides how, that is, in which direction, that crack propagates. The PLS, which essentially predicts mode I propagation, cannot possibly h...
متن کاملMultiple Moving Cracks in a Nonhomogeneous Orthotropic Strip
The problem of several finite moving cracks in a functionally graded material is solved by dislocation technique under the condition of anti-plane deformation. By using the Fourier transform the stress fields are obtained for a functionally graded strip containing a screw dislocation. The stress components reveal the familiar Cauchy singularity at the location of dislocation. The solution is em...
